The first signs of psoriasis is changes in skin appearance. The affected skin is typically a little raised, red or pink in colour and scaly, as well as being itchy and painful in some cases. Psoriasis can vary from person to person, with some people suffering from moderate Psoriasis where only certain parts of the body are affected, while others suffer with severe psoriasis where large areas of their body are covered.
Appearing at any age psoriasis can affect any part of the body including scalp, legs, hands and feet, eyelids, ears, mouth, lips, skin fold, back as well as nails. For many psoriasis tend to flare up during the Autumn and Winter months, a combination of cold weather, dry air along with less exposure to sunlight all contribute towards flaring of psoriasis during the colder months.
Chinese Medicine Perspective on Psoriasis
Traditional Chinese Medicine’s view on psoriasis stands in stark contrast with the Western view. It is not just the treatment that differs, but also the way its viewed in terms of diagnosis, and understanding the cause of this challenging skin disorder.
According to TCM, psoriasis are caused due to excess heat in the body, this heat results from pathogenic wind entering the body and invading yin and blood. This excess heat is what causes the redness, itching and in some cases pain. The more intense the heat that is present in the body the more symptoms will be experienced. As the skin condition develops further blood stasis, and blood dryness can occurs. In TCM blood dryness is associated with symptoms such as itching and blood stasis with scaly skin and plaques.
In Western Medicine, psoriasis is thought to be a autoimmune condition in which the body inadvertently attacks cells in the dermis which results in overproduction of cells in the epidermis causing the symptoms of psoriasis.
