6 Reasons You Haven’t Done Dry January Right

Dry January offers a great opportunity to reset and start fresh as we go into the New Year. Although traditionally it means no alcohol for the month of January, many now extend it to getting better sleep, better skin, better overall heath and a sense of control.

Abstaining from alcohol for a month has many benefits if its done correctly. Many give up alcohol but end up feeling worse, they feel fatigued, irritated, bloated. In Chinese Medicine, simply stopping alcohol without adjusting other aspects of your life can simply create new imbalances.

Dry January is meant to help you recover, not drain you further.

Alcohol is considered warm and can affect Liver, Spleen, Kidneys as well as the nervous system, going cold turkey and stopping alcohol especially in the winter months can lead to unexpected deficiencies in the body. Here are 6 reasons, from a Chinese medicine perspective, why you may not have done Dry January “right”

1. You Removed Alcohol Without Supporting the Liver

Many studies have shown that even low to moderate alcohol consumption can worsen liver health. This is in line with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which identifies the effect alcohol has on Liver. Although the goal with stopping alcohol is to detox the body it can lead to constrain.

In TCM Liver governs the flow of Qi and regulates emotions. If alcohol is suddenly stopped without supporting Liver health, it can result in Liver Stagnation which can show up in symptoms such as Irritability, mood disturbance, and anxiety, sleep disruption as well as headaches. This is also supported by the clinical guidelines list.

Also alcohol often hides the underlying Liver Qi stagnation which can manifest into symptoms like stress, anger, anxiety. Undertaking a “dry month” without a solid plan after the month can you feeling worst because the root cause was never addressed.

If you’re not drinking alcohol, your drinks should be:
• Warm drinks such as tea, soups, warm water
• Gently stimulating
• Supportive to digestion

2. You didn’t nourish Spleen and digestion

Alcohol is just part of the problem, you need to actively put effort into strengthening Spleen and Stomach so Qi and Blood can be restored. If you decide to undertake dry January but continue to have irregular meal times, consume cold food and even worse replace alcohol with cold frizzy sugary drinks it will weaken the Spleen further and keep feeding the same Damp‑Heat patterns that alcohol intensifies.

A weak Spleen can manifest in various way from bloating, brain fog, water retention, overthinking. Rather than feeling “cleansed” during Dry January, if you feel more heavy and foggy its a sign that Spleen needs to be nourished alongside cutting alcohol.

3. You Removed Warmth of Yang (Alcohol) in the Coldest (Yin) Season

In Chinese Medicine, Warm is considered Yang energy while cold is considered Yin energy.

Studies have shown that alcohol changes thermal sensation in the cold, this is in line with Chinese Medicine theory that Alcohol has warming (Yang energy). Removing warming energy of alcohol especially in the Yin dominant month of January can lead to Yang deficiency causing further tiredness, low libido, sleep troubles, feeling unmotivated.

It is recommended to add more warming support in the months of January in the form of warming foods or even supplements to support the warmth your body needs instead of further depleting it by.

4. You Fought the Season Instead of Aligning With It

In Chinese medicine, winter is seen as the body’s “rest season,” and the Kidneys are like your deep rechargeable battery that stores your core life energy, called Jing. Jing is thought to support how long and how well you live, your fertility, your bone strength, and your ability to cope with stress.

If you use Dry January to do more in terms of work, exercise in addition to cutting alcohol, it draws from Jing’s reserve. According to TCM you may have cut of alcohol but you are still draining your reserves instead of restoring them. It is recommended to adapt a slower pace, eat warm nourishing food, sleep longer and rest more.

Stopping alcohol doesn’t mean you should:
• Train harder
• Wake earlier
• Add more discipline
• Stack new goals

5. You treated Dry January as just willpower

Many treat Dry January and cutting alcohol from their lives as a test of will power and discipline, without considering the body’s natural rhythms or needs. In Chinese Medicine health is all about balance, pushing yourself too much to stick to your dry January goal can backfire and create more stress which can further cause tiredness, mental fog. It is better to support your body with alternative lifestyle changes if you are undertaking Dry January instead of forcing your body.

6. You Detoxed Too Much

You made Dry January quite intense, along with cutting alcohol you decided to do juice diets, cleansing, fasting, taking on new exercises which drained your Qi and blood, especially in winter.

Cold juices, fasting, harsh cleanses, excessive sweating from exercise can lead to :
• Weaken Yang
• Deplete energy
• Increase cravings
• Lower immunity

So instead of feeling cleaner and clearer, you end up tired, feeling dizzy, cold hands and feet, low mood, and poor concentration. Chinese medicine always recommends steady nourishment and regular meals over extreme detox strategies, after all January is a restore phase not a purge phase.
