What Is Chinese Massage And How It Can Help You

Chinese Massage (also known as Tui’na or Tuina Massage) is an ancient form of medical therapy. It comprises one of the three main therapies of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and shares the same theoretical framework and principles as that of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine – the concept of Qi.

When healthy, an abundant supply of Qi (life force or energy) flows through the body’s meridians – a network of invisible channels throughout the body. If the flow of Qi becomes blocked or depleted, then the body fails to maintain harmony, balance and order, and illness follows.

TCM considers Chinese Massage to be an external form of therapy, suitable for people of all ages. Pressure is applied to the acupressure points (the same points as are targeted with Acupuncture) which lie along the network of meridians conducting Qi around the body. The purpose is to clear any blockages and restore the flow of Qi so that harmony, order and balance are maintained and restored. In this way, the healing process is activated and with it the maintenance and restoration of good health.

Chinese Massage can be used to treat specific problems and to promote general well being and good body balance – both physical and mental. It is a powerful treatment in terms of re-adjusting the functions of the body. It has no adverse side effects and is often used in combination with Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine.

It is an energising therapy. A typical session may vary from thirty minutes to an hour – the length of the message depends on the condition being treated. Massage methods include the use of hand techniques to massage the soft tissue (muscles and tendons) of the body, acupressure techniques to directly affect the flow of Qi, and manipulation techniques to realign the musculoskeletal framework. Many of the techniques used to resemble that of western massage i.e. gliding, kneading, vibration, tapping, pressing, rolling and shaking.
